These seminars have been initiated by The New Zealand Commission for UNESCO and the Living Values Trust. The enthusiasm shown by the many City Councils who are hosting these events throughout New Zealand, reflects the growing understanding throughout the country that:
The future success and happiness of our children depends on an education system that builds children with character – character that is supported by positive values that are modelled and taught throughout the whole school and the wider community, within and beyond the school gate, within and beyond the classroom.
A school becomes a values-based learning community by asking four key questions:
Do we have a set of core values that guide the life of the school?
How do we express what we value? Are the values we state the ones we practice?
How do we help our students to learn about their own values and the values of others?
These seminars will have a strong how to focus and will:
Assist schools to more clearly define their purpose, and explain the essential part values education plays in this
Demonstrate the successful Living Values model for becoming a values-based learning community
Introduce guidelines and resources for developing values education across the whole school, in and out of the classroom
Discuss the questions and fears that can prevent us getting where we want to be.
Form networks of school communities to share knowledge and support
